His comment wasn’t derogatory–actually it was true but it was not good to say it. “Negro” does not generally have a negative connotation with older people—that’s supposedly why the US Census uses it as a category (black, African-American, negro).
Trent Lott was glorifying racial segregation and Jim Crow laws. VERY different.

Sure is, and the thing is everybody thinks this is offensive to Obama, but the people who should be offended by Reid’s comments are those who have a darker skin tone or different “dialect” than Obama, because according to Reid, there is something not so good about them. What a hurtful thing to say.

not at all. there’s a world of difference between what harry reid said over a year ago and trent lott’s vocal agreement with strom thurmond’s support of segregation in the 1948 election.
if you haven’t studied history, i suggest you do so. strom wanted to maintain the apartheid policies of the south, and trent lott brazenly said america would be a better place if strom had succeeded.
the comment reid made is NOTHING like that.
edit: of course, according to your comments, you probably think trent lott was just “stating the obvious” when HE said america would be better off under a policy of apartheid.

Not surprisingly, yes. Will Reid be made to resign because of it, no. Within a months time, this will have been forgotten until the next Conservative makes some sort of comment. Then they’ll be ready to burn them at the stake. It’s up to the American People that actually care that there’s a double standard in Washington to do something about it come election time. The elected officials in power obviously relish the double standard and don’t have a problem with it. It’s not their country though, it’s ours and we have a right to say who we pay to run it.

Even the NAACP came out in support of Reid. There is no way they would have supported Mitch McConnell if he had made the exact same statement. I’m sure they would be calling for his ouster from the Senate and organizing protests. It diminishes them as a civil rights organization. They are simply a liberal Democrat organization.
