Rudy Giuliani
The former mayor of New York, Rudy or Rudolph Giuliani was one of the presumptive presidential nominees for 2008. He served as the mayor for two terms in New York. He pulled himself out from the presidential race in January and fully approved McCain.
This year in 2008, he did put up an impressive fight, however, his rather liberal views about abortion and gay rights did not grant him much of a place in the eyes of the conservative republicans. He personally believes that abortion is wrong but maintains that ultimately the woman must get to make her choice. Though he did not support same sex marriages, he did support civil unions and said that all the city benefits must be made available to gay people as well. In addition, his campaigning took a backseat when his favorite reference Bernard Kerik, was found to be a fraud in many tax cases and also had other federal charges against him. He also preferred to concentrate on the big states to win his votes, which later became a strategy that did not quite go well. His stronghold in those states fell greatly and the lead that he initially had was lost.
He is most remembered for his stance and work during and after the 9/11 attacks. He was considered to be the leader who had taken charge of the restoration of the country after the attacks. He advocated himself as a worker who toiled with the rest of them. A lot of them opposed this statement. However, the media was all praise for his immediate action after the attacks. He was also voted as the Person of the Year by the Time magazine that year. That was not all; he elicited comments from Oprah Winfrey, and Vincent Cannato hugely in his favor. However, there were critics, both activists and the public saying that Giuliani was just another politician trying to exaggerate things and get his popularity up by quoting his “contributions” to the people of America in getting them together after the attacks.
His participation in the 2012 elections is, however, a question mark. There was a lot of discussion about the website called joinrudy2012 which is extremely similar to the official joinrudy2008. At first, there were a lot of rumors saying that he was already campaigning for the 2012 election but later, Sunny Mindel who is the spokesperson said that the site was not official and they would file for immediate closure of the website and make sure that the particular domain name would be ceased. The public has given varied feedbacks upon receiving this news as some people were diehard Giuliani supporters and they were hoping that this early campaign would flourish. Some remained skeptical about the issue of it not being legitimate and some others just viewed it as another incident that shook the world of politics and made headlines only to be forgotten the next day.
All said and done, the fact remains that Rudy Giuliani still remains a credible presidential candidate for the 2012 and the Governor’s post for 2010
