Sarah Palin
Though the US elections of this year have only just come to an end, there are already speculations about the possible candidates in the 2012 elections. The current president elect is Barack Obama and there is a fair chance of him contesting again in the next elections.
There have been a lot of discussions and debates about the plausible Republican candidates who will be contesting against him. One of the most obvious and talked about figure is Sarah Palin, Senator John McCain’s vice-presidential nominee this year in 2008. Alaska’s Governor, religious fundamentalist and hockey mom –Palin is a conservative republican who has been endorsed by many who think she fits the bill for the perfect republican, perfect president for the United States.
Governor Sarah Palin was born in Idaho and she is the first woman to become the governor of this state. She throws great importance to issues of oil and gas depletion and believes that the natural resources must be used sparingly and the general health and safety of nature must be ensured at all costs. She heads the NGA’s (National Governor’s Association) committee of Natural Resources. She also places value on the special children with special needs as she herself is the mother of a child with Down’s syndrome.
Regarding Palin’s chances in the 2012 elections, there have been mixed reactions and opinions. Some people are fully for Palin and believe that if she stands up for other issues just as much as she does for her religious principles, she has a great potential due to her wholehearted nature and instant popularity. Her name was on all lips just as soon as she was announced as the vice-presidential nominee this year and people found her to be refreshing and collected. However, some others do not agree with the fact that given all her positives, Palin will be able to survive the 2012 elections. The main reasons quoted by people are the strong position of Obama, to begin with. The country was ecstatic and overwhelmed by his knowledge and charisma. It is often brought into light that Sarah Palin has known to have answered questions incoherently during interviews and talk shows, thus displaying a certain lack of knowledge when it comes to issues regarding state and foreign policy. Her famous lines saying that the Iraq war is an act foreseen by god, for example have been widely criticized. Her other beliefs about abortions, sex education and teaching creationism in educational institutions have also been subject to constant disparagement. Her interview with Charlie Gibson and her views (or the lack thereof) about the Bush doctrine has also gotten her some bad publicity.
All in all Sarah Palin does not have many people in favor of her, even republicans. They believe that other republicans have more chances than she does. The people of the Republican Party have often called Palin, John McCain’s “mistake”. However the citizens who support her are fully for Sarah Palin as President in 2012 and believe in her abilities to make it as the first woman president of America. Whether that happens or not, what can be said with surety is that the glass ceiling has been broken, for one.
