Others have the right to say they don’t like that joke — and to tell advertisers that they won’t patronize businesses that advertise on the show with the joke.
It’s the nature of free speech — everyone gets it, even the people you don’t like.
But, Letterman admitted the joke was a horrible mistake and apologized, and Palin accepted. It’s over.

Saying that Letterman should apologize, or even be taken off the air, has nothing to do with being for or against free speech. If “Republicans” called for government sanctions against Letterman or CBS, much like the Democrats are trying to squelch talk radio, then the freedom of speech issue could be addressed.
If your neighbor was spreading false rumors about you, you would probably demand an apology (not an infringement on his free speech rights). If you call the police to have him arrested for what he is saying then you have trampled on his free speech rights. There is a difference.

If Sarah Palin wanted to fight back she could easily remind David Letterman that his kid was born out of wedlock. David Letterman did not marry the mother of his kid until 4 years later. But she did not.

David Letterman has done this before. He used to attack G. W. Bush’s daughters on a regular basis.
Also keep in mind it was Obama himself who stated kids are off limits.

Limits on free speech are well established in law and morality. Letterman clearly stepped over the line into immoral and illegal behavior, and he has basically admitted this, so you can probably give up on the idea of defending him. He doesn’t even defend himself anymore.

like most things in this country.. people reacted on an emotional basis, and not thinking things through. Did he make a mistake? Yep. Did Palin make a scene about it, beyond what it was worth? You betcha.
Palin has been a script, from day one, with nothing substantial behind it. Most of America figured this out a long time ago. The woman is an opportunist.
Performers don’t do their own writing..and they don’t do their own research. He DIDN’T KNOW which daughter was there. Palin worked in TV.. not to mention her political speeches that came from staff.
Notice the issues around the GOP fundraiser. Go back and re read the news reports where she could not be bothered to make a committment as to if she would or would not attend (which is why Gingrich got invited to speak). That would have been unprofessional for a lowly community organizer.. not to mention a Governor.

Here is the deal. Republicans are for free speech, but they are not for hypocrisy and double standards. If Letterman had spoken about Obama’s daughters, then it would be an enormous issue. There would be hell to pay, as there should be. There is the belief that the families of politicians should be left out of what is going on. Letterman did not respect that. He also made the joke about their younger 14 year old daughter who was in New york with Palin, not Bristol. So there is also the issue that the comment was sexual in nature and that is highly inappropriate, not only because it is disgusting, but because it was about a minor.
So as a Republican, yes I am for free speech, not double standards in the media.

I don’t think freedom speech means getting on TV and calling somebody a slut and making filthy remarks about their 14 yr old kid (he made dirty comments about Willow not Bristol). Where has the decency and kindness in this country gone when we actually have people who support behavior like this? What if he did this to you or a member of your family?
What Letterman did was tacky.
You talk of free speach were our president gets a pass on new reporters reporting on anything contrary or negative, a free pass for him. I though reporters were never bought and alway sought for the truth. Were are those watergate reporters now. We the people want real news not a slanted report. News should always be bipartisan and politics has no place in the news. The news protects the people from tyrany.
With freedom comes responsibility. The statement Mr. Letterman made was definitely irresponsible.
