10/24/2008,Survey:Sarah Palin has the experience to be a great VP or President. Agree or disagree?

Ryan C asked:

Consider this, Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren said to Sarah Palin {during an interview}: “I’ve been up in Alaska, went up and met a lot of your friends, a lot of people you worked with. And it’s a beautiful state. You have a very high approval rating up there.” See http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,434944,00.html . CNN’s Drew Griffin, accurately, said to Sarah Palin {in an interview}: “you are the only person in this race with executive experience, who’s taken over governments as mayor and governor.” In response, Sarah Palin, said: “I do have more experience than Barack Obama does.” See http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/10/21/palin.sitcom.transcript/ . In fact, while campaigning, Sarah Palin, said: “Barack Obama only spent 304 days-just 304 days-in the senate before running for president,” See http://www.miamiherald.com/news/politics/AP/story/734268.html .

Accordingly, this is former President Bill Clinton’s argument against Barack Obama, as well. Clinton, during “An hour” interview with Charlie Rose, questioned voters being “prepared to roll the dice” with a Barack Obama Presidency. As Clinton puts it, “When is the last time we elected a president based on one year of service in the senate before he started running?” Clinton, further, said: “If you listen to the people who are most strongly for him they say, ‘basicly we have to throw away all those experienced people…And we want somebody who started running for president a year after he became a senator because he’s fresh, he’s new…and we’re willing to risk it.” However, Clinton, said: “I think a president ought to’ve done something for other people and for his country when you pick a president.” see http://www.charlierose.com/shows/2007/12/14/1/an-hour-with-former-president-bill-clinton .

In short, that describes Sarah Palin. She would make a wonderful vice president and/or president (not to say that the others wouldn’t make an okay president or vice president).

    No Obama 2012

Disagree, her judgement and ignorance show aggressive behaviour that is risky.

  2. R8derMike says:

    Vote Palin

    Disagree, strongly.

    I don’t agree.

Palin lacks the intellectual strength necessary for quick and accurate decision-making. Can you imagine her as the President? It is to shudder!

  4. Evil Independent says:

    Vote Palin

    Disagree.

Being mayor of a small town does not equate with enough experience to be VP of the USA. She has been governor less than a year.

    No party, male.

Well, Fox has stated the Palin side of things.
She clearly is way out of her league.

She thinks that, for one, the VP is in charge of the senate. I hate to tell her this, but she will not be allowed on the floor of the senate and will not be allowed in any committe meetings. You’d think she would have read the job description- as it’s in the constitution.

The problem isn’t that she’s stupid. It’s that she doesn’t appear to have a clue about what she doesn’t know. She thinks she can ‘change’ washington- but a little familiarity with how the place works is kind of a pre-requisite.

Male. Registered Republican. Will be voting Obama/Biden.

I agree with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Colin Powell, Kathleen Parker, David Brooks, Christopher Hitchens, and Christopher Buckley: she isn’t ready.

Palin should have never been named as the GOP VP candidate. It was wrong, she is unqualified and in my eyes very dangerous!! She needs to go away. You can guess my party and I am a woman that’s insulted by Palins presence!!

Even long time Alaska residents say that anybody “without experience” can become the town dogcatcher, mayor, or state governor. It’s the Alaskan way of life, which is why they like it that way.

I’m a male, lifelong member of the Republican party. I’m voting for Obama this year.

Agree she would make a great VP. She doesn’t owe anyone anything,
(That’s new) and she’s a lot smarter than Biden. What kind of VP Nominee makes the statement that no matter who’s elected, they will
“be tested in the first 6 months” by terrorists countries to see if he’ll stand up to them. What an absolutely stupid statement to make. It may be true, but saying it is just asking them to do it.
Obama has no experience. He’s a smooth talking windbag.
I’m a Republican who doesn’t vote a straight ticket. We make mistakes too.

One rap on Sarah Palin’s qualifications to be Vice President is that she governs one of our least populated states, with a budget of “only” $12 billion and 16,000 full-time state employees. On the other hand, it turns out that the Governor’s office in Alaska is one of the country’s most powerful.

For more than two decades Thad Beyle, a political scientist at the University of North Carolina, has maintained an index of “institutional powers” in state offices. He rates governorships on potential length of service, budgetary and appointment authority, veto power and other factors. Mr. Beyle’s findings for 2008 rate Alaska at 4.1 on a scale of 5. The national average is 3.5.

Only four other states — Maryland, New Jersey, New York and West Virginia — concentrate as much power in the Governor’s office as Alaska does, and only one state (Massachusetts) concentrates more. California may be the nation’s most populous state, but its Governor rates as below-average (3.2) in executive authority. This may account in part for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s poor legislative track record. The lowest rating goes to Vermont (2.5), where the Governor (remember Howard Dean) is a figurehead compared to Mrs. Palin.

In Alaska, the Governor has line-item veto power over the budget and can only be overridden by a three-quarters majority of the Legislature. In 1992, the year Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton was elected President, his state budget was $2 billion and among the smallest in the country. Compared to that, Sarah Palin is an executive giant.

The last evangelical conservative to be a Governor then President was the Governor of a large state, second in population, dealt with very large budgets, had many more social issues to contend with, and had actual foreign experience. He is the guy in the office right now and most people do not think he is doing a good job.
I think faith is a nice thing as long as it serves you but to base your world view on it is a big mistake. Just saying something is so doesn’t make it so and Palin is fond of doing just that.
This time around I want someone who isn’t afraid of using reason and logic and leaves their ‘guts instincts’ at the door.
