Jenn asked:
I was very impressed last night with Mike Huckabee. I think he is something new. Do you think he has a chance now? What are the pros and cons? I would love to hear opinions of other repubs out there.
If you can give reasons why you feel that way I would appreciate it. Citations would be great. B4 I vote I want to be informed.

I’m a Huckabee supporter, I’ll be up front about that.
Pros? He’s an excellent speaker, its almost as if he’s been given the questions before the debates while no one else has. He has the benefit of actually believing the things he says. I’m a democrat, and am actually not religious. Yet, his sincerity and values have made him my choice for president. I’ve yet to catch him changing his mind, even if the change would have perhaps have benefited him. He’s been a Governor, which is a strong administrative background.. In the end, I disagree with him on several things, but he is the only contender which I trust.
Cons? Poor organization and financial support. The media is focused on McCain, Romney, Giuliani, and Thompson, giving him little mention in popular news. People worry about that turning towards him this late will aid Clinton, most would rather a poor candidate, but at least one that they feel has the name recognition to beat her. He is a minister, which scares some. He has limited foreign experience, which is however also true of the others (except McCain). Also, his fair tax policy has yet to convince me.
In any case, it astonishes me that the news can report on the debate without even mentioning Governor Huckabee. (See FOX News). Especially in contrast to the bumbling of Giuliani and Romney, he handled every question eloquently.
Edit: I certainly challenge the answerer below me to watch the discussion on scholarships for children of illegal immigrants again. Huckabee is firm on border control, but does not fault children, who through no fault of their own, are here and working hard to better themselves. Huck’s bill supported exactly the hard-workers we want in this country. He was very explicit about the provisions.

he has charisma. But then no one is denying that. What i saw lacked substance. Yeah great for the laugh, but where is the substance? he didnt defend his record on giving illegals tuitionn breaks well either.
The one thing i dont like about debates is people focus too much on the style and not on the substance. Huckabee was all style and no substance.

I think him being a preacher has made him a great speaker. Other than that, he is no different than the rest. Beinga good speaker, dosent qualify you for president. And when we are faing something like the NAU, and the loss of sovernty, we cannot elect on speaking ability alone. We need a advocate for the American Citizens & The US Constitution.
His biggest applause is when he said he wants to get rid of the IRS (First time his campaign I have herd him mention this). Something Ron Paul has been saying for more than 20 years.

Except for his strong pro-illegal views I like Huckabee. I will not vote for him because of his strong pro-illegal views. HE IS WRONG!
We are almost done with 8 years of Jorge Bush and his Mexican butt kissing views. We don’t need more of this type of destruction of our society with Huckabee, McCain or any of the Democrats!
EDIT: I agree with him that it is a problem to punish the illegal children for their parent’s actions. We should also never reward them for their parent’s behavior!
While we are rewarding the actions of the illegal parents, we are currently punishing American citizens for being soldiers when they can’t get in-state tuition after they return from Iraq. That is wrong and it is happening everyday!
American citizens MUST come first!

too many cons to list, with not enough pros’s in the end he is just as secretive as bush and Clinton( he had his hard drives crushed not just erased when he left the governorship, he is riddled with scandals also , and in the end he is a nanny state politician
he handled him self well, i just dont believe him

Do you mind if a Liberal Jew speaks Up?
Among the Republicans, Huckabee frightens me the least. He actually seems like a nice guy who wouldn’t want to see a woman water-boarded into revealing the name of the physician who performed an abortion and he doesn’t seem likely to enact laws to strip the doctr and his family of all that they are worth for the ‘crime.’
Weird to say this about a modern Republican but Huckabee truly seems like a Colonial Era politician. Called to serve willing to serve able to serve.
Peace…………………………..ppppppppppffff
PS Huckabee handles himself well in debate
mike huckabee
He came across very impressive, more so than I thought he would.
ALSO –
I can’t seem to let go of John McCain’s valuable knowledge of foreign affairs, that our country really needs right now.

I like Mike!!! I grew up in Arkansas and still have family there. He is a compassionate conservative, did alot of good as governor. I think he is trustworthy, geniune, and could be a good bridge-builder between the parties. Noone is going to be totally perfect in all areas. I hope I get to vote for him.

I really enjoyed listening to him. I’ve been impressed with his honestly. Several months ago they kept asking all candidates both dem and repub silly questions to get to know them better like what other career would they have chosen and what bad habits they had, the others all said very politically correct things and he was really funny with answers like I’d like to be a bass player. Of course that’s not why I would vote for him.
I’ve been hearing that he raised taxes in Arkansas, which scares me a bit. He’s saying he had no other choice, but that doesn’t seem like a good way to go.
He’s for fair tax, and eliminating the IRS, which would be great but I don’t know that a president would have enough power to do so.
When it comes to social issues he is the far more Conservative then Romney, or Giuliani.
I plan to vote for him in the primary and he does have a chance albeit slim. I have a feeling he’s going to end up as a VP this time around.

Huckabee is a seriously flawed candidate.. I could never support him..In a prior debate he stated that he would enter a war with Iran without the consent of Congress, he is for amnesty for illegal immigrants, not to mention he wants us to invest our social security into Wall Street.. he has already been investigated for ethics violations and if elected he will raise taxes and sink the US into more debt..
This is a good piece on him:
“Huckabee not all he appears to be”
“What do Arkansas conservatives think of their former governor? Not much. The Arkansas Republican Assembly, an organization whose members are among the most fiercely conservative in the state, held a presidential straw poll at its annual convention in July. Huckabee was trounced in the poll by Fred Thompson, who received 86% (that’s right – 86%) of the votes cast by the ARRA delegates.
On immigration, Huckabee is not quite the strict enforcement guy his campaign would like you to believe he is. As the Arizona Republic reported:
Gov. Mike Huckabee on Thursday heaped criticism upon immigration legislation in the Arkansas Legislature, describing it as “inflammatory . . . race-baiting and demagoguery.” He also challenged the Christian values of its main sponsor.
Huckabee said the bill, seeking to forbid public assistance and voting rights to undocumented immigrants, “inflames those who are racist and bigots and makes them think there’s a real problem. But there’s not.”
Finally, Huckabee had his own Willie Horton moment, turning loose a monster on the public that even Bill Clinton wouldn’t pardon:
… there is one man Huckabee believed deserved a second chance, convicted rapist Wayne Dumond, who continues to haunt Huckabee’s burgeoning presidential campaign.
… Dumond – now dead – was paroled from an Arkansas prison, with then- governor Huckabee’s endorsement, only to sexually assault and kill a woman in Missouri.
“It was one of those things I just feel horrible about. You just ache all the way to the bone over what happened,” the former Arkansas governor said in an interview. “But nobody could know that” Dumond would attack again, he said.
Dumond’s case is notorious in Arkansas. In 1984, he raped a 17-year-old girl. While awaiting trial at his home, he was castrated by, he said, masked intruders. Later, after Dumond went to prison for life, some people in Arkansas saw the sentence as excessive, especially given his mutilation.
Huckabee was one, and, after becoming governor in 1996, he announced his desire to commute Dumond’s sentence. Dumond’s rape victim, Ashley Stevens, saw it differently.
Stevens, now 40 and living in the western United States, said she tried to persuade Huckabee not to shorten the sentence for Dumond.
“I told [Huckabee]: If you ever let him out, he’s going to do it again,” she said in an interview.
She was able to get a meeting with the governor – who, she said, had not spoken to her before announcing his intention to commute Dumond’s sentence – but realized Huckabee had “made up his mind.” So Stevens stood up, she said, walked over to Huckabee, who was seated on a sofa, squatted down and thrust her face inches from his.
“I said, ‘This is how close I was to Dumond’s face for an hour,’ “ Stevens recalled. “ ‘I’ll never forget his face, and you’ll never forget mine.’ “
The parole board – following a closed meeting with Huckabee – decided to let Dumond go. The following year, Dumond committed the Missouri slaying. He died in prison in 2005.
In the final analysis, Huckabee appears to be even more of a “compasssionate conservative,” big-spending, big-government guy and open-borders advocate than George W. Bush, without the dedication of the current president to lasting tax cuts.
Danger, Will Robinson, danger… ”
“Tax Burden Sky-Rocketed under Huckabee
Washington – The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette ran an article today confirming what the Club for Growth PAC has been saying for months now: Mike Huckabee is a tax-hiker plain and simple.
According to the Democrat-Gazette, “the average Arkansan’s tax burden grew from $1,969 in the fiscal year that ended June 30, 1997, to $2,902 in the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2005, including local taxes,” a whopping tax increase of 47% under Huckabee’s tenure. Tax legislation passed while Huckabee was governor totaled “a net tax increase of $505 million, a figure adjusted for inflation and economic growth,” according to the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration.
Huckabee likes to wave away criticisms of his economic record by saying he cut taxes 90 times, but the same Democrat-Gazette article points out that the so-called 90 tax cuts included one medium tax cut ($90 million) and 89 tiny cuts. Clearly, Huckabee’s tax increases far outstripped any of his tax cuts, reaching a net tax increase of $505 million. Some of these include:
Higher sales taxes (Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, 11/07/96)
Higher gas taxes (Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, 06/29/99)
Higher grocery taxes (Associated Press, 09/11/02; Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, 11/17/02)
Higher taxes on nursing home beds (Associated Press, 06/25/01)
“In past debates, Huckabee has dismissed criticisms of his tax record with superficial answers and half-truths,” said Club for Growth President Pat Toomey. “Hopefully, tonight’s moderators will not let Huckabee off the hook so easily. Voters across America have a right to know the truth about Mike Huckabee’s tax-hiking record.”
